Ten minutes. That’s all I spend on Facebook these days. I like to skim my newsfeed for interesting stories to read and see what my friends are up to. Today I happened to come across one that I found interesting.
Someone in my network posted this idea.
For people aged 18-25, instead of spending $25K a year to go to an average college, they should approach a top company to work for and offer them to work for free for six months. Do that three or four times and you’ll learn way more than in school, have no debt and tons of experience not to mention some cool brand names to put on your resume. On top of that, you’ll have expanded your network to include some influential business people.
To some extent, I agree. With the access to information available to us via the web, aka Google, YouTube and teaching sites such as Udemy, outside those people who want to become doctors, scientists, and lawyers, the question must be asked – Is college worth it?
To be fair though, I remember what it was like to be 18. I had no idea what I wanted to be. College was a place many people found themselves. I get that. But when colleges cost anywhere from $50,000 to $250,000, that’s a heck of a chunk of change to find oneself.
Personally, I think college has outpriced itself. It used to pay for itself many times over. Today, I’m not convinced.
So just what would I do if someone approached me with 25K in the bank and they wanted my advice. Here’s what I’d say.
Like everyone, I am always on the lookout for a good deal. That’s the case when I go shopping for a car, am looking to buy a house or just trying to find a good place for dinner. I’m all about getting the best bang for your buck. But I’m not just talking about money. When people or companies hire me, I want to make sure they not only get their money’s worth but also their time’s worth.
After all, “Time is more valuable than money.” That’s what my virtual mentor Jim Rohn used to say. I’ve taken that to heart, which is why any advice I give also includes the time cost involved.
Investment 1: Mentors
Mentors are like teachers on speed. They often offer intense 3-day workshops which cost up to $25,000. I wouldn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket and therefore, I would suggest working with up-and-coming stars, that you can work with directly.
Here are three people I think I would invest my money in:
– Kyle Wilson. Here’s a marketing genius and was Jim Rohn’s 18-year business partner. He’s one of the most genuine people I’ve ever had the pleasure of learning from. He’s truly a man of his word. He offers a special book campaign that I think is well worth its cost. He also has an Inner Circle, which is one of the best masterminds around.
– Kimanzi Constable. A few years ago, I came across Kimanzi on Facebook and started applying his tips. Worked like gangbusters. He also runs a private Facebook group for those who want to take things to the next level.
– Sohail Khan. There are very few people that understand joint ventures. Sohail Khan is one of them. He’s very approachable and offers special workshops a few times a year in both London and Las Vegas.
Investment 2: Travel
There is no substitute for travel, especially for people who haven’t been outside their own country. It’s a truly eye-opening experience and one that has changed many people’s lives, including my own.
Take a few weeks and visit a few places you’ve always wanted to. You’ll come back with all sorts of experiences. But best of all, you’ll see your own country with new eyes.
Investment 3: Audiobooks
While I’m a huge fan of books (my library has over 1800 books in it), I do think audiobooks offer the most value. They are easy to absorb. It can be done anywhere. And you can listen to them while you do other activities; exercise, driving, cooking. Also, you don’t have to buy anything new.
Secondhand via eBay will allow you to pick up a whole lot more for a fraction of the actual cost.

Investment 4: A new computer / iPad Pro
It’s a tool we all need and use. Don’t start off your business with an old clunker. No need to go crazy, but get something decent.
Investment 5: A website
Go on Fiverr and you’ll find lots of people who can put together a kick-butt site for less than you realize. If you want my web guy, just reach out to me (directly or on LinkedIn). Happy to make the intro.
Investment 6: Speed reading course
It’s amazing how much material we need to read these days. Become a good reader.
Investment 7: Typing course
If you’re slow at typing, change that.
And there you have it, the seven things I’d invest over sending my kid to college for just one year!
To some parents that might sound cuckoo, but if you want your kids to get the most out of college, these will allow them to take their college experience to a whole other level.
